Scanner Ownership vs. Outsourcing

Some of the top considerations that make outsourcing your scan projects the most efficient and cost effective are:

  1. Infrequent use- if you will only need to scan on a limited basis, it is much better to outsource.
  2. Cost- often there is not a sufficient budget to purchase the scanner you need.
  3. Resources- you need the funds to purchase, to train operators, purchase specialized software, and develop experience scanning.
  4. Variety- multiple scanners available, matched to the part for optimal accuracy.
  5. Training- no hardware/software training required.
  6. Facilities- no dedicated lab environment required, that sits idle when not in use.

Ownership generally will make the most sense if you encounter the following criteria:

  1. High Volume Production- parts need to be scanned in-line, often without much notice.
  2. Security- proprietary products and designs, or secure limited access facilities.
  3. Inspection requirements- specific inspection vendor protocol, limiting to onsite method only.
  4. Time- immediate response to production changes and revisions.
  5. Convenience- scans are scheduled based on internal workflow and staff availability.

Two additional items that should be considered as part of the buy vs. hire decision making process:

  • Many facilities find it very helpful to outsource the scan process initially, and as part of this process help determine what they actually need, and what training and software will be required. An actual test drive of the systems, which gives management and engineering staff real world use examples to assist in the decision-making process.
  • Cost of staff and facilities need to be factored into the decision. In addition to the salary rate- computer cost, additional software, and annual licensing/maintenance fees are additional expenses. You also have to consider taxes, employee benefits, overtime, and financing costs. All of these are often very different from one company to the next, and require careful consideration before making purchase decisions.
